Inflation Reduction Act represents the strongest climate legislation in U.S. history
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — In response to the House and Senate passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, the Nevada Conservation League Executive Director Paul Selberg released a statement thanking Nevada’s federal delegation for their vote and efforts to get the historic bill to President Biden’s desk.
“Between extreme weather events, high gas prices, and rising inflation, Nevada families need transformative cost-saving climate legislation now more than ever. The Nevada Conservation League thanks Senators Cortez Masto and Rosen and Representatives Titus, Horsford, and Lee for their support in passing the largest climate bill in our nation’s history.
The passage of the Inflation Reduction Act is a big win for Nevadans and our climate. These investments will ramp up domestic renewable energy production to expand pollution-free electric vehicles, create millions of good-paying clean energy jobs, advance environmental justice, and reduce energy bills for working families across the country. While this bill is not perfect, this legislation would put us on the path to reducing carbon emissions by roughly 40 percent by 2030 — by far the biggest step our federal government has ever taken to fight the climate crisis.
Currently, Nevada is projected to see nearly 30 days of extreme heat a year, with heat wave days projected to increase from 15 to almost 55 days annually. That means that a reduction in energy costs for each family is an absolute necessity and provided by this bill.
The Inflation Reduction Act ensures Nevada can use federal investments in ways that most benefit our communities and build on our progress. We are proud that Nevada has been proactive on climate and clean energy policy, from increasing our renewable portfolio standards to setting emissions reduction goals to passing major legislation last session that will strengthen our transmission grid and expand electric vehicle charging stations. Federal investments only strengthen our work and advance us toward our climate and clean energy goals.
Getting to this point is a testament to the diverse coalition, including labor, environmental justice advocates, and young people, relentlessly fighting for climate action, environmental justice, and good-paying jobs.
This is a major step towards a brighter, cleaner, and healthier energy future for all.”
