NEVADA – Today, local groups came together to discuss the potential consequences of a second Trump presidency. Speakers talked about resistance efforts to potential immigration issues, including deportation claims made by President-Elect Trump during his campaign. Additionally, speakers highlighted the potential implications of the United States Supreme Court and the potential consequences associated with reproductive health.
Shelbie Swartz, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress, issued the following statement:
“Our leaders in Carson City and in Congress must do everything in their power to protect Nevadans from a federal government no longer concerned with their well-being. Now is the time for our leaders to be brave: to stand up for their constituents that Trump is going to attack again, and to stand up to the billionaires and corporations that have made life harder and more expensive for all Nevadans. It’s incumbent upon us and everyone in our movement to ensure that those leaders are held accountable – that our leaders speak with their actions, not just their words. This is who we are. In Nevada, we don’t punch down and we don’t leave anyone behind. Our fight is upward, and it is together. Our future depends on it.”
Leo Murrieta, Executive Director of Make the Road Action Nevada, issued the following statement:
“We need a proactive, winning strategy that puts immigrant communities and working families at the heart of our vision. It’s time for leaders who are ready to move beyond fear-based policies and instead push for comprehensive immigration reform and a clear path to citizenship. It’s time for leaders who see our communities as an integral part of this country’s fabric, not a political talking point.
Today, we stand united, ready to resist any policies that threaten our communities. Make the Road Action Nevada is here to say: we’re in this for the long haul, and we won’t rest until we secure a future of justice, equity, and opportunity for every family.”
Paula Luna, Deputy Director of Battle Born Progress, issued the following statement:
“Plans for mass deportations aren’t about enforcing the law or border security. This is all from the same Trump who said immigrants were ‘poisoning the blood of our country.’ No immigrant will be off the table, no one will be spared for being law-abiding or tax-paying. Dreamers, those on Temporary Protected Status or immigrants who have lived in the US for years would all be at risk.
These plans would have untold ripple effects, from the trauma of sending millions of people to detention camps on American soil, to the total collapse of our economy. And so we must be clear: These plans are not talking points. These plans are ready and waiting for the moment that Trump sets foot into the oval office. We must be ready to challenge these policies as they happen.”
Camalot Todd, Communications Director with the Nevada Conservation League, issued the following statement:
“Hope may not change the night into day, but I know that it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. I know that progress is not linear. I have seen it stumble and rise. Let our grief be alchemized into hope and that hope be transmuted into action. We will fight for democracy, for freedom, for a more just, more equitable, brighter future. For good paying clean energy jobs that don’t need a college degree, clean air, for clean water, for the protection of our public lands – for affordable Nevadan grown clean energy. And we will fight against tyranny, against fascism, against utility monopolies and their greed and the erosion of our civil liberties, and we will fight for Nevadans. We are grieving, yes, and we will stand united. Yes, we are grieving, and we will mobilize. Yes, we are grieving, and we will grow stronger, more defiant, more resilient, our voices louder. Yes, we grieve, and we have work to do. Because progress may not come easy and it may not always be linear, but it is worth the fight.
Jarrett Clark, Communications Director with For Our Future Nevada, issued the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s victory will not halt our efforts to protect and advocate for Nevada’s working families. The series of oligarchs and billionaires propping him up, like Elon Musk, are blatantly targeting unions, affordable healthcare, and public education. They aim to repeal the Affordable Care Act, putting 1.2 million Nevadans with pre-existing conditions at risk, slash support for public schools by dismantling the Department of Education, and roll back workers’ rights to unionize.
We are committed to resisting these harmful policies and standing up for workers, public schools, and affordable healthcare in Nevada. We refuse to let them dismantle the institutions that protect and support everyday Nevadans, and we look forward to working alongside our progressive champions like Senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen, and Representatives Dina Titus, Susie Lee, Steven Horsford, and state legislators to shield our community from the Trump administration’s worst agendas.”
